How the volume is calculated
For a repeating orthogonal grid of rectangular tiles, subtract the tile face from one tile-and-joint module. Multiply the joint-area fraction by the total tiled area and effective fill depth. The area includes the joints.
f = g(a + b + g) / ((a + g)(b + g))
V [L] = A [m²] × f × d [mm]
From a product factor to a purchasing estimate
Many manufacturers estimate consumption using the sum of two joint strips per tile and a product-specific factor K. We apply your K to that documented approximation, not to the exact module volume. It estimates product mass before the separate allowance.
a,b,g,d: mm · q [kg/m²] = ((a + b) / (a × b)) × g × d × K
M = A × q; Mₚ = M × (1 + p/100); N = ⌈Mₚ / P⌉; Mᵦ = N × P
Leave K at zero for volume only. Use a product-specific consumption factor documented for the formula below, with dimensions in millimetres. Bulk powder density and mixed grout density are not substitutes. K stays in the manufacturer’s SI formula when you switch units.
Apply a separate allowance for the work. Leave it at zero if the manufacturer’s factor already includes those losses.

Why the two estimates differ
The repeating-module model includes the joint intersections and the enlarged module area. The strip approximation uses the tile face area. They converge for narrow joints; wider joints make the difference more visible. Neither model includes the outer boundary exactly.
V = 1.186 L; A × g × d × (1/a + 1/b) = 1.2 L
Effect of tile size
The table keeps the same area, joint width and effective depth as the worked example. It shows geometric volume only, without assuming a universal grout density.
| Tile length × Tile width | Geometric joint volume |
|---|---|
| 100 × 100 mm | 4.592 L |
| 300 × 300 mm | 1.576 L |
| 300 × 600 mm | 1.186 L |
| 600 × 600 mm | 0.794 L |
| 600 × 1,200 mm | 0.597 L |
Where this model applies
Use it for ordinary rectangular tiles in an orthogonal field with uniform joints and fill depth. Mosaic, herringbone, irregular edges, bevels, movement joints and complex borders need a separate assessment. Follow the grout manufacturer’s joint-width and depth limits.
Common estimating mistakes
Use actual tile face dimensions, not a nominal tile-and-joint module. Do not count the same allowance twice, confuse grout with tile adhesive or flexible sealant, or treat loose powder density as a product consumption factor. Check a small practical area before purchasing for a large job.
Plan the tile layout first
Use the same tile dimensions and ordinary joint width when moving between the layout guide and this grout estimate. Movement and perimeter joints need their own treatment.
