For a single wall thickness represented by the depth of one unit. Use the actual brick or block dimensions and the chosen joint thickness.
- Wall and openings
- Wall length and height; rectangular door/window groups with width, height and count.
- Unit and joint
- Unit length, height and depth; joint thickness contributes to the face module.
- Buying
- Optional units per pack and price per unit. The calculator does not have a separate reserve-percentage field.
The same dimensional method handles bricks and blocks; selecting dimensions is more useful than assuming a universal size. Openings reduce net area.
- Gross, opening and net wall areas; base unit count, estimated courses and units per square metre or square foot.
- Estimated dry-ingredient volume for mortar; whole packs and cost when purchase inputs are supplied. Pack-based cost includes all units in the rounded-up packs.
A solid block wall with no openings. The example uses the geometric unit count; no extra material is added.
| Quantity | Value |
|---|---|
| Wall length × height | 6 × 2.4 m |
| Unit length × height × depth; joint | 390 × 190 × 190 mm; 10 mm |
| Wall area; face module | 14.4 m²; 0.080 m² |
| Base units; courses; units per m² | 180; 12; 12.5 |
| Dry-ingredient volume estimate | 0.268 m³ |
Module area = (0.390 + 0.010) × (0.190 + 0.010). Base units = ceil(net wall area / module area). The course count rounds wall height divided by module height up. Units per m² = 180 / 14.4 = 12.5. These are quantity estimates, not a bond drawing.
The mortar model subtracts the full solid rectangular unit volume from net wall volume, then multiplies the remainder by 1.33. Here: (14.4 × 0.19 − 180 × 0.39 × 0.19 × 0.19) × 1.33 = 0.2683674 m³.
The mortar estimate is not a hollow-core fill or a manufacturer adhesive consumption rate. Thin-bed products and hollow blocks need their own product checks. The 1.33 multiplier is the model’s fixed assumption, not the yield of a bagged product.
Openings are summed by area, without coordinates. Enter non-overlapping openings once. Whole units and packs round up; metric and imperial dimensions are supported. Allow separately for cuts and breakage, since the calculator does not add a reserve.
Does the app draw every cut brick?
No. The count is based on net area and face module; bonding, corner returns and cut reuse need a separate layout.
Why enter block depth?
It sets the modelled wall thickness for the mortar-volume estimate.
