Section × heightπD²/4W × D
Left: D is the round column diameter, giving area πD²/4. Right: W and D are the two rectangular section dimensions. Multiply either area by the full height; the example uses metres.Illustration; not to scale.

What to measure

For columns or solid piers of constant cross-section. Measure one column, then multiply by the number of identical pieces.

Cross-section
Diameter for a round column, one side for a square, width and depth for a rectangle.
Height and quantity
The full concrete height and the count of identical columns.

Choose the right setup

Switch the section shape before entering its dimensions. Each calculation uses one shape and size.

Read the result

  • Net volume per column, total net volume, extra and required concrete.

A worked example

Four square columns with the same height.

How the numbers fit together

Section area × height gives one column. Multiply by quantity, then apply the allowance. A round section instead uses π × diameter² / 4.

From volume to delivery

Ready-mix planning uses the required volume and a truck capacity you enter. Bagged mix uses the finished yield of one bag; bag weight alone does not determine it. Whole bags and loads round up. Optional cost uses your price per volume or per bag.

Bag-count example for a separate slab: 0.660 m³ divided by an assumed yield of 0.020 m³ per bag gives 33 bags. This yield is an example input, not a specification for every 40 kg or 50 kg bag. Check the selected product.

Units, allowances and limits

Metric and imperial entry are supported. In these examples, lengths are converted to metres before multiplication; displayed volumes are rounded to three decimals. The arithmetic retains the unrounded value.

The extra percentage is a chosen allowance for this estimate. It is not a required building-code value. Geometry estimates quantity; it does not select concrete strength, foundation depth or reinforcement.

Tapered columns, hollow sections and enlarged bases are not included in a constant solid section.

On the job

Does a round column use its radius?

Enter the diameter. The calculator halves it internally.

Are reinforcing bars deducted?

No automatic bar displacement is deducted. The concrete result follows the full section you enter.
